The federal and state governments accused San Francisco on Wednesday of discharging huge amounts of untreated wastewater and sewage into the bay and the ocean for many years, violating environmental laws and endangering beachgoers and aquatic life.
“Since 2016, the city has discharged an average of 1.8 billion gallons of combined sewage, which includes untreated sewage, each year from its combined sewer systems into the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay,” the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the California Regional Water Quality Control Board said in a lawsuit filed in federal court.
