Paul Martin joins John Kerry in assembly of the "automatically excommunicated"

October 20, 2004

If Catholic politicians like presidential candidate John Kerry, who persist in supporting the right to abortion can consider themselves "automatically excommunicated", count Canada Prime Minister Paul Martin in the same category.

The Vatican's bum's rush leaves no room for speculation or Doubting Thomas's.

The "automatically excommunicated" category comes not from the opponent's camp, or even from the mainline media. It originates from the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

If Kerry has been flip-flopping on where he stands on abortion out on the hustings, Martin has been more surefooted.

"Never, never will I allow the rights of women to be removed by going back to the past," Martin said in French during last June's federal election campaign, "They have to decide for themselves." (Globe and Mail, June 7, 2004).

While american Catholic bishops were talking of denying Kerry the Eucharist last summer, the Bishop of Calgary was blasting Martin.

Bishop Fred Henry publicly rebuked Prime Minister Paul Martin for what he called his scandalous "moral incoherence" on abortion.

In a pastoral letter last June, the bishop criticized Martin for claiming to be a devout Catholic while being pro-abortion and pro-gay marriage among other things.

When a tax bureaucrat with Revenue Canada later asked him to delete the letter from the church's website, the bishop's answer was "No."

Martin blew into Ottawa on a wave of ancient rites and mythical figures, after making Irish rocker Bono keynote speaker at the Liberal leadership convention. Minutes before being officially sworn in as Prime Minister on Dec. 12 last year, Martin underwent an ancient native cleansing ceremony.

The smudging of Martin, smoke from a burning bowl of sage wafted about his body by an eagle's feather, was planned by members of his inner circle, likely to illustrate just how committed the new government is to tackling aboriginal problems.

a news release issued by Governor General adrienne Clarkson's office said that the process is meant to help people "proceed on their journey in the clearest way."

Included in Martin's "inner circle" is controversial UN poster boy and former employer Maurice Strong, whose wife Hanne runs the world's largest New age spiritual colony at the couple's Crestone Colorado ranch.

Last December's smudging ceremony was the first for an incoming Canadian Prime Minister.

On august 25, the Bank of Canada unveiled a new $20 Bank note, featuring for the first time ever, the work of the late Haida artist Bill Reid, whose signature masterpiece, the Haida Gwaii is depicted flipside to the Queen.

In a February 14, 2004 speech to the Denver, Colorado business community, ambassador Michael Kergin described the Haida Gwaii as "a boat filled with animals and birds, women and men, warriors and diplomats--some proud, some fearful, some conciliatory—but all are expressive."

Meanwhile, there is no word on whether Martin considers himself "automatically excommunicated".
