Tides aWOL from philanthropy convention

by Judi Mcleod

May 3, 2004

Conspicuously absent when high rollers of the world’s largest philanthropic foundations gathered in Toronto last week: Teresa Heinz Kerry and her very-much-in-the-news Tides Foundation.

Representatives from the Rockefeller, Ford and Carnegie foundations were in attendance when the Council on Foundations held its annual conference to probe topics as touchy as scandals involving self-dealing, for example where CEOs are enriching themselves at the expense of their organizations. Internal salaries far in excess of grants being made, which have taken a big toll on latter day philanthropic organizations, was also up for discussion.

Philanthropy is a new growth industry that all but shouts out for the need of transparency in governance and control.

In 1992, there were only about 30,000 foundations in the U.S. Today there are about 65,000 registered.

The same cry for ethics plaguing the corporate realm since the Enron scandal is coming soon to a philanthropic foundation near you.

"We need to reinstill, or in some cases instill for the first time, that sense of honour, of transparency, of ethical behaviour in our work," Dot Ridings, CEO of Council on Foundations told the gathering.

The voluminous handbag of Teresa Heinz Kerry has been making headlines out on hustings of the presidential campaign. Headlines began to skyrocket when Heinz Kerry, who heads the $1.2 billion Heinz Foundation endowment, took her husband’s last name about 18 months ago.

There’s more trouble in being Mrs. John Kerry it seems than just "being me" after she lands at the White House.

Senator John Kerry’s second wife has financed the shadowy Tides Foundation to the tune of $4 million over the years.

according to FrontPage Magazine, "The Tides Foundation, a "charity" established in 1976 by anti-war leftist Drummond Pike, distributes millions of dollars in grants every year to political organizations advocating for left causes."

While the math on grants may not be so easy to do, summing up the hierarchy of the foundation is. Ketchup Queen Teresa Heinz Kerry, currency speculator George Soros, journalist, Bill Moyers and the Ford Foundation fund the Tides Foundation/Center.

In total, Tides has distributed more than $300 million for the left-wing anti-war, anti-trade, Islamist organizations, pro-terrorists legal groups, environmentalists, abortion partisans, extremist homosexual activists and open border advocates.

The Democratic Justice Fund was established with the aid of George Soros’ Open Society Institute. Currency speculator and pro-drug advocate Soros is, like Teresa Heinz Kerry, a major contributor to Tides, having donated more than $7 million. The Democratic Justice Fund seeks to ease restrictions on Muslim immigration to the U.S., particularly from countries designated by the Justice Department as "terrorist nations".

The Tides Foundation has funded the Ruckus Society, a group of anarchist greens who rioted and looted Seattle during the 1999 World Trade Organization riots.

Greenpeace is a well-known Tides recipient. Tides gave the world’s largest environmental lobby, a quarter of a million dollars over the past 10 years.

and therein lies the rub why Heinz Kerry and her Tide representatives were aWOL at last week’s Council on Foundations Toronto convention.

Revenue Canada restricts "charitable foundations" to no-politics activities. Pulling the charitable status of Greenpeace Canada in 1999, Rev Canada officials concluded that Greenpeace does no public good.

Donors no longer get tax receipts from Greenpeace Canada, which has been in financial decline ever since.

When exercised, the Canadian government’s policies on what a charitable organization operating from public donations can or cannot do, have teeth.

In short, in Canada charitable organizations can not participate in politicking of any kind. a bevy of free enterprise american groups have been lobbying the United States to adopt the same rules.

That means you too, Teresa Heinz Kerry.
