The Left Does Not Get It

by Ryan Thompson

December 22, 2004

The american Left continues to be rejected by the american people. They do not understand why they are being rejected, and how to end this rejection. To understand how to stop their slide, the left must engage in self-reflection. What are the Democrats’ problems and how can they solve them?

Before we can get into the specific flaws of modern day liberalism, we must understand the fundamental problem. Liberalism underestimates the potential of the average citizen. according to modern day liberal philosophy, the average citizen cannot make it on their own. To exist, the average citizen requires assistance from the government.

This thought coexists with the liberal idea that everyone is a victim. These principles are contradictory to the ideas of the founders and most americans. Most americans do not want a handout or assistance from the government. They want to be independent of the government and free to make their own choices. Until the left recognizes that americans are against the nanny state, they will not be able to gain a substantial portion of the vote.

The left’s view on national security is the second cause of their decline. Since the 1960s, the american left has represented the anti-war, UN loving fringe. The divide between conservatives and liberals is evident by analyzing the weekly Rasmussen Reports survey on the Global War on Terrorism. Republicans and Independents consistently state that the United States is winning the Global War on Terrorism while Democrats by a small margin think we are losing. These statistics show how the left’s doctrine of doubt trickles into every policy. Until the left realizes that the majority of americans support a strong national defense without foreign influence, they will lose every election on the national level.

Their national security strategy is also influenced by their 1960s definition of peace. For liberals, peace is the absence of hostilities. For conservatives, peace is the absence of threats to freedom. The liberal position allows for compromising of our freedoms while the conservative position defends them. This is why liberals are willing to allow a dictator to stay in power when conservatives are calling for their head. The liberal idea of peace undermines freedom while the conservative position upholds its principles.

The next problem with the liberal agenda involves the social issues. The media has made a big deal about social issues playing a part in the recent election, but they are wrong. Social issues only played a small role in the election, but if the left continues on its current course, social issues will be more important in future elections. By forcing gay marriage down the throats of the american people, they have created the opposite. More people oppose homosexuality today than four years ago. For the left to take the thunder partially out of the values’ movement, they need to embrace traditional marriage while advocating civil unions on the local level.

another social issue that is hurting Democrats is abortion. The left has justifiably earned the image of being baby killers through their support of radical organizations such as the National Organization of Women (NOW). as a recent Fox News poll showed, nearly 70 percent of americans want abortions limited, but only a little more than 20 percent want all abortions to be illegal. If the left wants to suck some air out of the values’ movement, they need to set an agenda that limits the number of abortions. Most americans agree with this policy, but the left’s support of radical organizations who love infanticide prevents compromise.

Social security reform has the potential to destroy the american left. With an average of 60 percent of americans supporting reform of the system, the american left is stuck supporting an unpopular status quo. If the left does not figure out how to save social security without raising taxes, they are likely to alienate even greater numbers of young voters. With the average age of Democrats being 60, they clearly need to expand their youth base or face total isolation in the future.

These are just some of the issues that are causing the left to suffer defeat and defeat. To end this slide into political isolation, they need to change their outlook on humanity and freedom. Instead of supporting defeat and compromise, they must advocate victory and life. Until they do this, they will lose election after election without end.
