God, Atheists,

In defense of our God-given rights

By Felicia (Fee) Benamon

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their CREATOR (I believe that means a higher power, a being more powerful than us), with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness."

Those beautiful words resonate throughout history as our Forefathers acknowledged a higher power, a belief in God, a belief of freedom for all men...stated in our Declaration of Independence. It is what gives us strength as a country. But today, we find ourselves strangely defending those truths, those Godly traditions in our society from those on the left, who wish to eradicate the mention of God from American public life and discourse. Our traditions involving Christianity should not be tossed aside in favor of the secular movement underway today. Secularism is a religion all in itself. And if America fails to stand up to it and denounce its influence, we will only have ourselves to blame with the state of affairs eroding in American society.

I am pleased to hear however, that conservatives have confronted the atheist Michael Newdow, who is on a never-ending quest to make sure he never hears the word "God" again. I knew it was only a matter of time before Newdow would attack the motto "In God We Trust" on American currency.

(CNSNews.com) - Conservative groups are rising to the defense of America's Christian heritage by fighting an atheist who wants to remove the motto "In God We Trust" from the nation's currency.

Michael Newdow told the ACLU of Oklahoma that he would file a lawsuit against the national motto this week on the grounds that it is an unconstitutional endorsement of religion and "excludes people who don't believe in God."

"He wants to use the federal courts to make his atheism the official religion of America," the American Family Association (AFA) warned in an email message to supporters.

Conservatives Mobilize Against Activist Atheist -- 11/15/2005

This is atrocious and a perfect example of a tyrant, wishing to push his views on a majority. And his success all depends on some in this country who are imbedded within the legal system, who think that they should legislate from the bench. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court comes to mind, the same court which ruled that parents are not the only ones with say in their child's sexual education. Then, there is the influence of the ALCU. There is NOTHING American about this organization. The ACLU has been used as a tool to tear down principles that our nation was founded upon. If they aren't busy going after the Boy Scouts for their stand against homosexuality and for pledging an oath to God ("do my duty to God and my country") , then it's fighting to remove the Ten Commandments from public grounds, fighting abstinence education in public schools, and fighting to keep the name of Jesus from being mentioned at city meetings. This is just the tip of the iceberg. If their motto was to preserve religious liberty, then they would not be so feverish to remove what has been a part of American life for so long.

Take for instance, our national monuments and Federal buildings in Washington. They hold references to God, Moses is seen holding the Ten Commandments on the U.S. Supreme Court Building. The Chamber of the House of Representatives holds a picture of Moses. Bible verses are inscribed in buildings all over Washington. Congress begins each session with prayer. Our President is a devoted Christian. Thank God he realizes how Christianity shapes our country, so we can be a blessing to others in need. If it were up to the ACLU and the left-wing, atheist crowd, Christianity would no longer be influential in society. But not if I, or other conservatives can help it!

Military/Students under fire

As if removing religious references from our society wasn't enough, military chaplains are now told they cannot pray in the name of Jesus ( ACLJ: Military Chaplains told NOT to pray in the name of Jesus!..petition to President Bush to uphold military prayer), yes you heard right! So our military, which fight for the freedoms we enjoy to worship any way we please, are told that they cannot call upon the name of their God for fear of making someone upset?! I hope I am not the only one who views this as absurd! If this rule is extended throughout the military, imagine the negative impact it could have.

As our troops fight in the heat of battle, as military chaplains stand side by side our men and women in the battlefield, they are a vital asset as our troops seek inspiration from above. They have every right to call upon the name of JESUS! Many may sacrifice their lives for this country, and during those crucial, final moments, you better be sure I want my chaplain to pray with me as I call on my God...by His name!

An excellent book...A Table in the Presence by Lt.Carey H. Cash, explains how a Marine Battalion experienced God's presence in the midst of war in Iraq ( Amazon.com: A Table in the Presence : The Dramatic Account of How a U.S. Marine Battalion Experienced God's Presence Amidst the chaos of war in Iraq). As I see how our fighting forces depend upon the direction, peace, and purpose from God, I would not want to limit their freedom to worship as they see fit.

Let's not forget our young people, who fight daily battles on university grounds all across this country. They are under assault (Bible Ban Controversy Swirls at University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire)...and now, students cannot hold bible studies on campus without someone getting upset? What a way to teach students that we live in a country of freedoms, and then tell them that they cannot hold a simple bible study in the privacy of their dorms! The intolerance towards conservative students and Christians on college campuses is growing, and it's an issue that shouldn't be ignored. Take for example, Rebecca Beach a campus activist with Young America's Foundation who was verbally assaulted and harassed by left-wing college Professor John Daly, for her conservative views/activism on campus. Daly writes an email to Beach stating the following:

Vows to kick young conservatives off campus

Student Fights Back

HERNDON, VA — Warren Community College English professor, John Daly, said that "Real freedom will come when soldiers in Iraq turn their guns on their superiors." Rebecca Beach, a freshman at Warren Community College in Washington, New Jersey, received this unexpected reply to a recent email she sent the faculty at her school announcing the appearance of decorated Iraq war hero, Lt. Col. Scott Rutter, on Thursday, November 17 to discuss America's accomplishments in Iraq.

In the email, Daly told Rebecca that he will ask students in his English and writing classes to boycott the event and also vowed "to expose [her] right-wing, anti-people politics until groups like [Rebecca's] won't dare show their face on a college campus." Daly's mean spirited and hateful comments were directed at Rebecca for organizing Lt. Col. Scott Rutter and for hanging up fliers contrasting the number of people killed under communism to those liberated under Ronald Reagan.

Since Professor John Daly has created a hostile learning environment for Rebecca, she is demanding that Warren Community College President William Austin institute seminars on free speech and sensitivity to teach intolerant leftists, such as Daly, to be respectful of differing opinion.

College Professor to Student: Real Freedom Will Come When American Soldiers Murder Superiors

College educators are intended to give their students an education, not indoctrinate them into some left-wing ideology, or threaten them because they hold different views. The college environment is about exchanging ideas, and the sharing of opinions. To smother a voice that is contrary to what you believe is a travesty and blight in our education system!

Respect our right to uplift God.

The fact that we esteem God so much in our country reminds us of our heritage, which involves Christianity. The public mention/uplifting of God shows that we are grateful for all that He has bestowed upon this nation.

Christianity endures within the hearts of 85% of Americans, who bring the positive influence of Christianity to every corner of American society. Our good nature, compassionate, and giving spirits is a direct manifestation of what Christianity is. It would be intolerant to suppress what drives Americans to do such goodness. But know this, that if there is no effort to counteract growing pessimism towards Christians and any mention of God in our society, we will be a nation of walking drones. Our Christian faith is what drives us on, what gives us a sense of well-being. Imagine if it became offensive to mention God in public...it will be a dark day. A form of slavery so to speak, in a country that is supposed to respect all faiths.

There must be a level of respect for our traditions, and sense enough to leave them intact.

And today, men and women are needed to uphold those traditions, before they fall by the wayside. It's time to defend our God given rights, otherwise, the efforts of those who died to make this country what it is would have died in vain.
