Will Ontario’s New School Textbooks Teach Our Children Same-Sex Marriage?

by Dr. Charles McVety
Saturday, September 10, 2005

Premier Dalton McGuinty recently pledged $61 Million for new textbooks for elementary and high schools across the province. Mr. McGuinty’s Liberals already banned the terms “Man and Woman”, “Wife”, “Husband”, “Widow”, “Widower” from all government programs, and services when referring to spouses. His government funded the new grade two level reader, entitled "Mom and Mum are Getting Married!". Undoubtedly his new textbooks will inundate the children of Ontario with anti-marriage propaganda.

The first wave of consequences resulting from the redefinition of marriage promises to severely damage the prospects of normative marriage for young, unsuspecting children being educated in Ontario public schools. We cannot expect children to be fed a steady diet of same-sex marriage everyday in school and not have it impact their future. In some European countries marriage is down 75% after just three years of same-sex marriage. Once my seven-year-old daughter reaches marrying age in 30 years will marriage be the norm or just an aberration for the deeply religious?

It appears if Dalton McGuinty has his way every child be introduced to same-sex marriage at the young age of six or seven years. His latest funding included a children’s reader entitled "Mom and Mum are Getting Married!", authored by Ken Setterington, and published by Second Story Press, a Toronto publishing company. The book is described as "a gentle story for young children that celebrates the joyous planning of a wedding where the happy couple happens to be two women."

Now the Premier proudly announces a massive $61 million dollar project to re-supply the schools of Ontario with new textbooks. His fellow MPP Rick Bartolucci stated “ books are important because they expand young minds. Children need books that aren’t falling apart and are modern enough to reflect society as it exists today.” The Liberal’s depiction of society is same-sex marriage without such offensive spousal terms such as “man and woman”, “wife”, or “husband”. According to Mr. McGuinty’s Bill 171 that became law on February 25 th 2005 , such terms must be expunged. Will they now continue in their social engineering experiment by changing textbook content? It is apparent that they wish to “expand young minds” to accept this distorted view of marriage.

We need to stand up for our children. They deserve to inherit the institution of marriage as given to us by God. Marriage is the natural relationship designed for abundant living, pro-creation and rearing of children. The young innocent boys and girls attending the public schools of Ontario do not deserve to be attacked with subversive ideology that promises to wreck havoc on their lives. As parents and adults we must take a stand and stop this wave of aggression.

Mr. McGuinty’s four children have now completed their schooling and do not have to be subjected to their father’s experiment. Unfortunately for millions of other children they will be subject to the Premier’s assault on marriage. The good news is that Mr. McGuinty’s Liberal party will have to face the parents and the electorate on October 4, 2007 in the upcoming provincial election. If people of faith and good-will exercise their God given civic duty and participate in the election campaign, hopefully democracy will prevail and the wrongs will be righted.
