Return to Canada Free Press

The Great Pretender of blogosphere

With rollicking fits of the giddies, a Mel Gibson impersonator boasted on the left wing Daily Kos yesterday: "I punked the Right-Wing (Canadian) Press With My Blog!"

The Mel impersonator meant Canada Free Press and, as an american, is likely unaware that "Right-Wing" and "Press" don't fit into the same sentence in Canada.

"…I started a satirical blog, Mel's Musings, to make fun of the retrograde political and religious views of Mel Gibson," wrote gobacktoTexas, the nom de plume of this braveheart pseudo Mel. "I never thought that there would be many who would think the site was seriously Mel Gibson's, let alone an "award-winning journalist with 30 years of experience." In one of the satirical posts on the blog, I posted an article with tongue-in-cheek commentary, from a right-wing tabloid journalist" yada, yada, yada.

and if I thought the Mel impersonator was mean, that was before I saw the two emails that followed the revelation of the Great Pretender's faux blog. Two emails of response to moi, that is if I'm not counting the hatchet attack by the Toronto Star's antonia Zerbisias on her blog, but then I never count the Toronto Star for much of anything,

"I'm guessing you used all of your investigative skills that you gained while working at Drudge…. The blog entries being posted by "Mel" right now are hilarious. In your race to print something before anyone else, you neglected the possibility that this was all a hoax.

Would u (sic) like a Kleenex? To wipe the egg from your face?" wrote Kevin.

Well, Kev, "the race to print something before anyone else" started on March 24, 2003 when I first started writing about the one and only (leftie pseudos notwithstanding) Mel Gibson in a column entitled Believing in Miracles.

In a second email from courteous Kev, he suggests, "If you value your credibility, you should remove the story and provide a retraction".

My story was a column, but for sure Kev wouldn't be the type to stand on ceremony.

although my column was never removed from the Canada Free Press website as ordered, the hoaxed Mel Gibson blogsite story about CFP was removed from Daily Kos by day's end.

Perhaps gobacktoTexas really went back to Texas, or maybe he's still at the corner store playing pinball.

at the end of the day, The Great Pretender, who pats himself on the back for "punking" unsuspecting folk is not even a pale copy of the real life courageous charismatic Mel Gibson.

and Kev, about your offer for a Kleenex, which I thought you pinkos viewed as a threat to the environment, better keep it for the gobacktoTexas hoaxster. He, she, it is going to really need it when the lawsuit from the real Mel hits.
