Paul Martin, Liberals

a day late and a dollar short

When referring to brazen people one of my grandfather's favorite expressions was that they had "the balls of a canal horse". That's how I'm seeing Paul Martin with his ever more bizarre promises that he hopes will save his sorry derriere. In an excerpt of a speech to the Winnipeg branch of the Canadian Club recently printed in the National Post, Martin lays claim to being Canada's savior.

"My party and I will deliver what no other party can, because we believe what no other party does. We will deliver the biggest tax cuts, the first new social program in a generation–child care–and the best plan for safe, healthier communities." Martin intoned, with unmitigated fervor, I'm sure.

Only problem is that reality fails to jibe with Mr. Martin's promises.

The Liberals are the only party that can deliver the biggest tax cuts?! Gee, that's news to me, as the surpluses the federal government has run up for the last 10 years are indicative that they are taking too much of our money to begin with and the fact that they have been keeping that money indicates a clear reluctance to cut taxes. Between 2001 and 2003, the federal government ran up surpluses totaling $40.3 billion; in 2004-2005 it was a whopping $9.1 billion. according to BDO Dunwoody, the annual budget surplus will run between $8 and $11 billion through to 2008.

The Liberals' pre-election shopping spree, which amounted to well over $30 billion in additional government expenditures will make sure that once they are finished buying our votes with our own money, all bets are off.

How do I know this, you ask? Just look at what the Libs have done these past 13 years and you will get a fairly good inkling.

as for the first new social program in a generation, the Liberals childcare scheme is yet another huge government program that will only benefit the 13% of parents who choose to send their children to "licensed", i.e. government approved daycare. The other 87% of parents who are caring for their children alternatively can go suck eggs.

If you like what happened to Canada's health care programs under the Liberals, wait ‘til you see what they can do with your children.

Martin also claimed the Liberals to be the only party that can make communities safer and healthier. after having governed for close to 13 years, the Liberals have accomplished quite the opposite, to be candid. Their $2 billion gun registry is one of the most monumental wastes of taxpayer money ever conceived. More wasteful even than the adscam scandal, because adscam at least made some people wealthy. Has the gun registry managed to save one life? It's hard to tell, since law-abiding citizens are not normally in the habit of shooting people. The idea that violent crime will somehow decrease by registering legally owned firearms is a conceit that has been disproven time and again. Paul Martin's announced plan to ban handguns in Canada altogether will accomplish absolutely nothing.

Other jurisdictions offer ample evidence that "gun control" actually makes the problem of violent crime worse. The evidence is there, plain as day. The fact that the Liberals chose to ignore the evidence is indicative of their limited intellectual abilities.

Martin also promised "healthier" communities. I'm not sure how he plans to achieve this. The state of health care in Canada is so deplorable and the remedies for fixing it are so silly that it's hard to take anything Martin says about it seriously.

as I recall, the Canada Health act was passed april 1, 1984 by Pierre Trudeau's Liberal government. That day marked the beginning of the decline of health care in Canada, a decline which continues to this day, a substantial portion of which is directly attributable to Paul Martin. Martin now says that he has the answer to repairing Health care in Canada. My question is: if you have the answer, then why didn't you implement it during the last 13 years?

It appears that the only health care remedy the Liberals have been able to come up with is to pump more money into the system. No amount of money is going to create more doctors, unless we open the delivery of health care to private, for profit providers and that's something which is so taboo, that even mentioning it in an internet article could result in an extended stay at a social re-education center.

For my money all the promises that Martin and his crew are making are too little, too late. The Liberals have had their chance and they have come up short. It's time for a change.
