Police puppies need names

by Judi McLeod
Friday, February 3, 2006

They're much cuter than the guys in uniform are. The 10 German shepherd puppies born at the Police Dog Service Training Centre in Innisfail, Alberta, that is.

The tumbling, bumbling, rolling over each other, playful, sleepy pups who appear to be all paws in endearing puppy hood are waiting for names.

The RCMP is encouraging children from across Canada to come up with names for the puppies. Suggested names must be of two syllables or less and begin with the letter "S".

Last year, the Mounties received more than 9,000 entries from children participating in a similar name-the-pup project.

Names in last year's puppy naming event began with the letter "R". Winners included Roxy, Radar and the very touching, "Rhoden"-a choice submitted by a girl who did her homework, said Inspector Lawrence Aimoe. Rhoden is short for Constable Willis Rhodeniser, a 28-year-old Saskatchewan Mountie shot in the line of duty in 1939.

Youngsters can mail in their puppy name picks before the contest closes on March 2. The "S named, tail-wagging puppy brigade is waiting.
