Lifeguard saves... SHARK?

By Joshua S. Hill

Wednesday, September 19, 2007

A short little pick-me-up story for you all today, focusing on the not so normal events in the life of a lifeguard. Normally scanning the waves for signs of human strife, Marisu Mironescu, a life guard from Coney Island beach New York, came to the aid of a shark.

Apparently a sand shark had made the mistake the cat had made, investing a little too much effort in its curiosity; as the saying goes, 'Curiosity killed the cat', and it very nearly killed the shark apparently.

At 2 feet long, the sand shark was apparently surrounded by some 75 to 100 people, who were determined to keep their beach safe from the harmless North American species of Sand Shark.

"They were holding on to it and some people were hitting him, smacking his face," said Mironescu.

The 39-year-old lifeguard took hold of the shark, and backstroked him out to open sea, where the risk of running in to a mob of angry pitchfork-waving flake lovers was somewhat lower.
