Cars, Gas Mileage

When Green Ain't Necessarily Good

By Jim Whelan, The Joan Randall Agency

Tuesday, August 21, 2007

Being green is now in, but every green idea ain't agood one. Back many moons ago, when the firstwave of gas hikes hit, the carmakers in Detroit andTokyo produced small cars like the Chevette, whichwas a rolling piece of crap. I know because I had cartrouble once, and that was the only available model.

I vowed never again to ride in anything like that, andI have kept my promise to myself. Lately, with theprice of gasoline still rising, the automakers are goingback to making slicker pieces of junk that get goodgas mileage.

Newspapers, magazines, and radio, television and theinternet are full of ads for these rolling coffins.

That's right, you're chances of dying in an accident ina small car are double those of an SUV.

Double.

Why not make a big vehicle that gets better mileage?

All things being equal people would choose the biggervehicle. They would chose it for one very simple and basicreason:

It's way more comfortable.

I know a guy who has a lot of buckalucka's in and is inthe public eye. Around where he lives, he drives a Honda.

At his vacation home he has a Hummer. And a big Mercedes.

No one really knows him where his vacation home is. He toldrecently that he has dreams of driving the Hummer where heworks, but it's a no can do thing with the peer group.

So he settles for when he is on vacation. He also said he isfearful when driving the small car. He has visions of beingcrushed.

Now the greenies would say that all cars being smaller wouldcure the problem. But that ain't gonna solve the problems of trucksand other delivery vehicles, of which there are an abundance. That wheatgrass has to get there somehow.

Build bigger vehicles with good gas mileage.

It can be done. If I were President...

From the big saddle,
Jim Whelan

P.S. In fact, I need to get The Joan Randall Agency plasteredon the side of a few tractor trailers, or start the Whelanator 500racing team. All good advertising vehicles.

Short of that, you need to call me right NOW to get youradvertising campaign started, so you can grow as big as youwant to. As big as Microsoft, Google, Honda, Gucci, or babigas you want. We can get you there. 206 407 3124
