Gas pump prices

Jack – say it ain't so!

By Arthur Weinreb

Monday, May 7, 2007

You can always tell when gas prices are on the rise and you don't even have to get in the car and drive past a gas station. Just tune into the news and when you hear the word "McTeague", you know it's not good news. McTeague refers to Liberal MP Dan McTeague who is can be heard from whenever fuel prices skyrocket as a result of alleged collusion by all the big, bad oil companies.

But now NDP leader Jack Layton is jumping into the fray after the most recent spike in the prices at the pump. Seemingly tired of going after the banks for charging consumers a couple of bucks for using another machine because they are too lazy to go to their own bank's ATM to get cash, Layton now has his sights set on the oil companies.

As those on the left always see it, the entire problem of rising gas prices can be solved if only the government will create another agency. Layton is calling on the Harper government to create such an agency that will monitor gas prices (as if we need to be told what they are) and to enforce "fair prices", whatever that happens to mean.

It's amazing how internationalists like Jack who think that Canada's foreign policy should be dictated by the UN, the EU and a bunch of other initials can't seem to understand that Canada's oil prices are set by world prices. But that doesn't matter as long as we can create another bureaucracy.

What the federal government could do of course would be to cut the federal taxes on a litre of gasoline, especially the GST which is not only a tax on goods and services but a tax on the other provincial, territorial and federal taxes. But of course that would amount to a "tax cut", a no-no for the socialists as it would benefit the dregs of society known as "the rich".

It is actually strange to see Layton argue for lower gas prices at this particular time. It is a simple economic principle, even in the parallel universe that Jack and his fellow travellers inhabit, that if prices rise, demand will fall. Buying less gasoline will mean that people will be driving less. And when Canadians end up driving less, there will be less carbon dioxide pumped into the air. And as everyone from infants on up surely knows by now, using less fuel will help to save the planet from the complete destruction that is resulting from man-made global warming.

It is actually quite comical to watch Layton and other practitioners of the global warming religion whine and moan in true Canadian fashion about something that will actually decrease carbon emissions that are caused by the selfish unwashed masses pumping gas into their SUV's.

The negative reaction of Jack Layton to the increase in gasoline prices that will help save the environment is further proof that the nonsense he and others spout about man-made global warming is further proof that climate change is a political, not a scientific issue. We are constantly being told to reduce our "carbon footprints" by being more "environmentally friendly". We are only a few short years away from having the light bulb police banging at our doors to look for illegal incandescent light bulbs. Yet being unable to drive as much and having to resort to public transportation or horror of horrors, bicycles, is now a bad thing; a problem that must be cured by creating another government agency to bring down the cost at the pumps.

The reality is that Layton's position on gasoline prices is the same as his one on ATM charges. He really couldn't care less about the plight of the ordinary Canadians; the ones whom he always purports to speak for but can never get more than 20% of their votes. His reason for speaking out against high gasoline prices and ATM fees is that he hates big oil companies and big banks. In his opinion, they have too much money. Being a true socialist, Jack wants their money to be spread around. When it comes to his socialist principles coming into conflict with what is good for the environment, global warming; the greatest threat to mankind since life began comes in a weak second.

Come on Jack; come out and say it – these high gas prices are good for the environment. You won't though, will you.?
