One of their leaders, a certain Mohamed Samaw, a Somali resident of the pirate stronghold in central Eyl town, who claims to have a “share” in a British-owned ship hijacked Monday, said four foreign ships previously captured by pirates are heading toward the lifeboat. A total of 54 hostages are on two of the ships, citizens of China, Germany, Russia, Ukraine, the Philippines, Tuvalu, Indonesia and Taiwan. How was it possible for four terrorists from Pirates-Are-Us to commandeer an American ship, manned by a crew of 20? Pirates not only raid but read and now now that every excuse in the book excuses them from their cut-throat lifestyle, including the most important one, “The War on Terror”, which no longer exists now that it has been officially filed under “overseas initiatives”. “All we need, first, is a safe route to escape with the captain, and then (negotiate) ransom later,” says Samaw. (MyWay). All we need is safe passage from terrorists on our open seas, and that should be non-negotiable! Sordid Somalia is resurrecting the Barbary Corsairs, sometimes called Ottoman Corsairs or Barbary Pirates, who were Muslim pirates and privateers who operated from North Africa from the time of the Crusades (11th century) until the early 19th century. This is their shameful and sordid past” “Based in North African ports such as Tunis, Tripoli, Algiers, Sale, and other ports in Morocco, they sailed mainly along the stretch of northern Africa known as the Barbary Coast. Their predation was said to extend throughout the Mediterranean, south along West Africa’s Atlantic seaboard, and into the North Atlantic as far north as Iceland, and they primarily commandeered western European ships in the western Mediterranean Sea. In addition, they engaged in Razzias, raids on European coastal towns, to capture Christian slaves to sell at slave markets in places such as Algeria and Morocco. (Italics CFP’s). The Muslims--not the Americans and Brits--were the original modern day slave drivers. This little fact was lost in history partially courtesy of Hollywood, who romanced the Errol Flynn genre of swashbucklers, making it seem legit for children to want to grow up sailing under the Skull & Bones. In fact, the history of the Barbary Coast is part of the indelible history of America’s courageous Marines, sent for the first time outside America to negate the heavy burden of paying out ransoms, in the Barbary War against Tunis, Algiers and Tripoli in 1801-05. And it was again piracy and hostage-taking that induced the Marines and U.S. Navy to return to the Mediterranean to fight a second war against Algiers in 1815. Now that four Somali terrorists have captured world attention in the Indian Ocean, there would be no better time than to fire back on them with the words that once mattered the most: “From the Halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli, we fight our country’s battles in the air, on land, and sea...”
