Thus far, President Obama is mimicking FDR’s abysmal lack of judgment and naiveté

Punk’d by Despots:  FDR and Barack Obama

Inasmuch as Barack Obama fancies himself alternatively the reincarnation of Abraham Lincoln or Franklin Delano Roosevelt, a closer perusal of FDR’s policies is in order.  Beyond the disastrous New Deal, a massive expansion of government bureaucracy and spending which extended the length of the Great Depression; FDR’s dealings with the homicidal Joe Stalin are revealing.

FDR referred the murderous tyrant as “Uncle Joe”; displaying a profound lack of understanding of the Bolshevik dictatorship.  FDR was deluded about the true nature of life in the Soviet Union; probably due to a combination of wishful thinking and naiveté.  (Heck, Alfons. A Child of Hitler:  Germany in the Days When God Wore a Swastika.  Phoenix:  Renaissance House Publishers, 1985).

All throughout the 2008 Presidential campaign the term “cult of personality” was bandied about quite a lot.  It is a term of derision but it didn’t originate with Barack Obama.  Former Soviet Premier, Nikta Khrushchev used the term to describe the adoration of the masses for ruthless communist, Joseph Stalin.  Former leader of the USSR, Stalin saw fit to eliminate millions of “surplus” people and wipe out the life savings of an entire population.  (Source)

Westerners had a difficult time grasping the magnitude of Stalin’s reign of terror; we had no frame of reference for the concept of Stalinism:  that unlimited violence is acceptable in pursuit of some supposedly “higher” purpose.

CIA reports disclose that FDR was so willing to curry favor with Stalin that he abandoned protocol and stayed in Soviet headquarters in Tehran and at Yalta, which enabled Stalin to have the president bugged.  FDR’s policy toward the vicious dictator was to beg, plead and cajole him into cooperation.

FDR believed that his personal charisma was quite sufficient to win over the monstrous Stalin.  Such was the arrogance of FDR.  Uncle Joe promised FDR that after WWII, he would grant freedom of religion to his people; private ownership of property and greater democracy.  Stalin ended up with Poland.

FDR’s poor judgment has been blamed on his failing health, specifically clinical depression.  CIA reports dispute this theory as symptoms were not observed by others at that time.

Astoundingly, Stalin’s poll numbers remain high among the Russian population.  The Chicago Tribune has reported Stalin’s approval ratings in 2006 were nearly 50%.

The mythology around Stalin persists as does his socialist legacy, including a perpetual lack of reliable moral standards and a high tolerance for government corruption, as well as a lack of respect for individual human life.  Today, Stalin is posthumously enjoying something of an image makeover.  New textbooks are emphasizing Stalin’s undisputed administrative skills and teaching youngsters that Stalin was forced to use “extreme measures” to turn his nation into a superpower.

Note the similarities between FDR’s approach to dealing with Stalin and Barack Obama’s stated agenda for dealing with murderous Islamofascists as well as rabidly anti-American tyrants.  Thus far, President Obama is mimicking FDR’s abysmal lack of judgment and naiveté in his efforts at conciliation with the most dangerous dictators on the planet.
