Blatant affront to Christianity and, in particular, to Catholicism

‘2012’ Continues Hollywood’s Relentless Attack on Christianity

The movie '2012' is billed as "an epic adventure about a global cataclysm that brings an end to the world" on Sony Pictures' official film website. What it doesn't advertise is its unabashed attack on Christianity. Director Roland Emmerich's previous disaster movies include Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow. The premise for '2012' is global catastrophe in the year that the 5,125 year long count Mayan calendar ends, December 21, 2012.

As expected with a film dealing with the end of the world, there are lots of special effects and ear-shattering explosions utilized to illustrate unavoidable mayhem and disaster. What was not expected was the blatant affront to Christianity and, in particular, to Catholicism. As world leaders confer with one another to try to save humanity, the Italian prime minister is singled out for holding back and praying for Divine intervention with the implication that praying for help is both futile and naive. As destructive events accelerate we see the Sistine Chapel being cracked apart precisely where God's hand touches Adam's in Michelangelo's classic fresco as if to imply that man is completely on his own. This is followed by St. Peter's Basilica toppling over onto the faithful crowded into St. Peter's square as if to punctuate the futility of people's faith. Next we see one of the most famous religious symbols in the world crumbling in destruction, Christ the Redeemer's statue in Rio de Janiero. There is a scene of Muslims praying in the heart of Mecca at Kaaba and miraculously, nothing happens to that cube shaped structure, the most sacred site in Islam. In an interview with SciFi Wire Mr. Emmerich noted that he wanted to destroy Kaaba but his co-writer talked him out of to avoid a Fatwa such as the famous one issued in the case of the Danish cartoonist who drew the prophet Mohammed in caricature in 2006. When asked about the attack on the Christian symbols, Mr. Emmerich stated "Because I am against organized religion". There is no dearth of widely recognized landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower, the Kremlin, the Empire State Building and etc. that could have been destroyed with the same computer animated graphics that destroyed the religious sites, but instead the filmmakers took on Christianity. And again, being politically correct includes attacking Christians and Christianity. '2012' was reportedly made for $200,000,000 and has taken in $138,000,000 at the box office as of this writing.
