In its preliminary report this week, the UN’s relocation committees reported to the Secretariat that they are recommending Singapore as the proposed new venue, with a target for completion of the new headquarters of August 2015.
In November of 2005, United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan proposed renovations to the United Nations Headquarters to be completed by 2014. That plan was not approved by the General Assembly, which instead resolved to seek a new location more central to its populous member countries.
Built in 1948, The UN sits on 16-acre site in New York City that is considered international territory, meaning that it belongs to no specific nation. The complex contains four main buildings: the General Assembly building, the Secretariat building, the Conference building, and a library. It has been a popular tourist destination since its construction; over 37 million people total have taken guided tours.
