Obama’s Partial Retreat from Holy Grail of Liberalism

This time, Barack Obama may have gone too far with his "clarifying words," because they concern the explosive issue of abortion, the right to which is and has been the Holy Grail of liberalism since 1973.

From an interview with Relevant Magazine, the senator was quoted as saying,

"I have repeatedly said that I think it's entirely appropriate for states to restrict or even prohibit late-term abortions as long as there is a strict, well-defined exception for the health of the mother. Now, I don't think that 'mental distress' qualifies as the health of the mother," Obama said. "I think it has to be a serious physical issue that arises in pregnancy, where there are real, significant problems to the mother carrying that child to term. Otherwise, as long as there is such a medical exception in place, I think we can prohibit late-term abortions."

Clearly, Senator Obama is not making new friends on the far left with his flip flops on Iraq, NAFTA, FISA, campaign financing, and the like. Add his latest words on abortion to the mix, and you get the sense that Barack Obama and the far left may be unwittingly setting the stage for a head-on collision during the national convention to be held in Denver from August 25 through 29. Obama appears to be counting on the fact that the left is so desperate for power after eight years of Bush-Cheney that they will stay with him regardless of how much flip-flopping he does. A word of caution seems appropriate, however. Remember, Senator Obama, Hillary Clinton merely "suspended" her campaign, which means that she could resume her pursuit for the top job in a heart beat should circumstances warrant. That would be the case should an untimely assassination tragedy occur, or should a young, inexperienced black man retreat too close to the center for the comfort of liberals counting on an obedient, pro-choice Marxist as the party's standard bearer.
