Act of Valor

Valor Without Actors

imageFrom now on, any action adventure or war movie is going to feel like one of those cheap flimsy outfits made in China from one of the big box stores. The flimsy thing is okay in its own way; it may be entirely serviceable. At least for awhile. But what it lacks is substance and timelessness. With Act of Valor, you can touch and feel the genuine article. Rich in tone and texture, the quality is unlike anything coming out of Hollywood.
The Navy SEALS were not portrayed by actors. Evidently, even the most wildly overpaid Hollywood hunk can't hack it through a day in the life of a Navy SEAL. But, not to worry, ladies, the real SEALS in the film are plenty handsome enough. I've read quite a number of books about our SEALS--before it became fashionable--so I was familiar with some of what they do. But, what I had read in no way came close to seeing these awe inspiring men in action. I saw the film on opening night and expected the usual cheering and hissing that goes along with action pictures. Instead, the audience went through the entire movie in complete, awed silence. After it was over, we all intuitively understood the need to exit quietly and respectfully, lost in our own thoughts.

Saturday morning, Fox News announced that Act of Valor had opened at number one at the box office.  The prediction of the day was that the film would earn $25 million over the weekend.  Whomever it is who calculates such things is pretty good at it.  Act of Valor earned $24.7 million over its first weekend. This is about so much more than a great movie, although Act of Valor certainly is that.  As our collective outrage grows over Barack Obama's shabby treatment of our military and our national anxiety mounts over who might be our next Commander in Chief; this movie was about America.  Act of Valor shows our magnificent SEALS exactly as they really are and America is enamored of  them.  In a time when so many Americans can barely scrape together the cost of a movie ticket, let alone the popcorn, we flocked to the theaters to see our real life heroes. There is much to love about this film; but,  what we can take away from its success is the undeniable truth:  we really are still America.
