The promised utopia
Mirage

Socialist (Progressive) utopias are mirages that appear on the horizon of human experience. They portray lush vegetation surrounding deep pools of clear cold refreshing water with a background of snow capped peaks. When they captivate us we discard the road maps of history and experience. We abandon the well-marked trail of freedom and bypass the oasis of truth, absolutes, morality and individual responsibility.
We slog frantically through the hot sand of radical change, stumble over the rocks of repeated failures and fall into the chasms of corruption, urged on by the frantic shouts and threats of the intellectuals. For all of our effort, the apparition comes no closer, its promises still shimmering remotely on the skyline; its siren voices urging us onward.
When, at last, we collapse from heat exhaustion the last thing our blistered eyes see is the mirage vanishing in the desert heat. The promised utopia isn’t there and never was.
