Jefrey Breshears, Ph.D., former history professor and president of The Areopagus, Atlanta, GA Published by The Areopagus, Atlanta-based Christian study center and education organization pages 37, illustrated with photos, tables and graphics, available at Amazon CreateSpace / $6. Atlanta, GA, - A new book, The Gospel According to Barack: Where Did Barack Obama Get His Ideas About Christianity? by Jefrey Breshears, published by Areopagus Publishing (Atlanta), answers important questions concerning President Obama’s support for same-sex marriage and other legal and moral issues. The book, written for both Christian and secular audiences, is neither a personal or political critique of the President, who was recently named “America’s First Gay President” by Newsweek magazine. Instead, The Gospel According to Barack is an analysis of the religious factors that have informed and influenced Obama’s views on a wide range social and moral issues.
Special broadcast news reports announced President Obama’s support for same-sex marriage on May 9, 2012, in which he attributed his “evolution” on the issue to his Christian faith. Religious leaders, as well as secular leaders and observers, were shocked by the announcement. Subsequent media coverage focused primarily on how Obama’s views would impact his political campaign. But, the critical question remains unanswered: How can anyone base their support for same-sex marriage on Christian faith? “I was motivated to write the book on hearing that President Obama’s statement that his Christian faith inspired him to publicly and officially support same-sex marriage,” said Jefrey Breshears, Ph.D., a Christian historian and president of The Areopagus, a Christian education organization and study center in Atlanta, GA. “His proactive announcement deserves an informed response because nothing could be more indefensible than debasing Christian faith to promote what is blatantly unbiblical.”

In The Gospel According to Barack, Breshears provides detailed information about two major factors that most influenced Obama’s understanding of Christian faith:
  1. mainline Protestant theological liberalism as propagated by the ultra-liberal United Church of Christ; and,
  2. Black Liberation Theology as advocated by his long-time pastor and mentor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright.
Breshears provides historical references to explain how these institutions have distorted biblical Christianity, calling into question whether Obama truly understands authentic Christianity. Among issues discussed in The Gospel According to Barack are:
  • The fundamental differences between biblically-based Christian orthodoxy and theological liberalism.
  • The historical factors that helped define theological liberalism, including the Reformation wars, the Scientific Revolution, the Enlightenment and the influence of Deism.
  • The theology of the United Church of Christ (UCC), the most liberal Protestant denomination in American church history
  • The origins of Black Liberation Theology and its relation to racialism and neo-Marxism.
  • The influence of Rev. Jeremiah Wright and Trinity United Church of Christ on Barack Obama’s religious ideals.
