Democrats Want to Add More Than a Half-Million Foreign Workers

At a time when the official unemployment rate has reached 6.1%, the highest since September 2003, the Democrats in Congress want to add 550,000 more Green Card holders, above the one million immigrants they already plan to welcome. That’s the word from NumbersUSA.

Not only is the U.S. experiencing a five-year high in unemployment, Congress wants to let foreign workers take jobs that should be available to Americans.

H.R. 5882, called “Recapturing Unused Employer-Sponsored Visas”, has been introduced by Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-CA), chair of the House Immigration subcommittee. Her district is the famed Silicon Valley, home to the headquarters of many high tech corporations that love hiring foreigners who they can pay less in exchange for the opportunity to live in the U.S.

The Green Cards would also go to engineers, health care workers, and a wide range of others who would compete for or already have jobs rendered unavailable to native-born Americans.

Does it make sense for the United States, in a period of higher unemployment, to add over a half-million to the workforce, pushing aside native-born Americans? You know those Green Cards are not being given out unless foreigners can demonstrate they either have a job or that one is waiting for them.

Meanwhile, in August, 592,000 Americans were added to the unemployment rolls and that does not include those already unemployed.

I am really tired of hearing about “jobs Americans won’t take” while the government leaves the doors open to foreign-born workers who will take any job just for the opportunity to come here.

If America is such a terrible place, a whole lot of people from other countries are awfully eager to come here. I can’t blame them, but I also think Congress has an obligation to encourage American firms to hire Americans.
