‘Frankenstorm’ more Perfect Foil than Perfect Storm?

If it weren’t for former Vice President Al Gore being so rushed off his feet now that he’s “exploring possible strategic options” that include the sale of his 59-million subscriber network, Current TV, the script for the Perfect Storm called ‘Frankenstorm’ could have have been written by him.
“Current TV, mostly confirming an item in Friday’s New York Post, said it has “activated” its bankers into exploring possible strategic options that could include a sale of the 59-million subscriber network.” (New York Post, Oct., 26, 2012) The news has hit saturation level about this week’s coming epic storm of predicted epic proportions. ‘Someone’ is trying to panic the masses warning that Tropical Storm, now Hurricane Sandy, due Monday, will leave millions in darkness and wipe out some before they can cast their vote in the November 6 election. It’s only a matter of time before the same weather people sounding the Sandy alarm blame it on Al Gore-style Global Warming/Climate Change.

According to public record Mother Nature wreaks havoc in storms of epic proportions every century or so and November 6 just happens to be the 100th anniversary of the Great Lakes Storm of 1913. Did ‘somebody’ merely Google it? Until recently moving to the shores of the mighty Lake Huron, I had been unaware that A cyclonic blizzard of nightmare proportions, the Great Lake Storm of 1913 struck on November 6, 1913, not dissipating until November 11, 1913 and leaving 24 inches of snow recorded in some areas before leaving the land. ‘Frankenstorm’ trumps all the names they came up with for the Great Lakes Storm back in 1913 when there was no Internet or bloggers. “The Great Lakes Storm of 1913, historically referred to as the “Big Blow”, the “Freshwater Fury” or the “White Hurricane”, was a blizzard with hurricane-force winds that devastated the Great Lakes Basin in the Midwestern United States and the Canadian province of Ontario from November 7 through November 10, 1913. The storm was most powerful on November 9, battering and overturning ships on four of the five Great Lakes, particularly Lake Huron. Deceptive lulls in the storm and the slow pace of weather reports contributed to the storm’s destructiveness.” (Wikipedia). “The deadliest and most destructive natural disaster ever to hit the lakes, the Great Lakes storm killed more than 250 people, destroyed 109 ships, and stranded 19 others. The financial loss in vehicles alone was nearly US $5 million, or about $100 million at current value. This included about $1 million at current value in lost cargo totalling about 68, 300 tons, such as coal, iron ore, and grain. “The storm, an extratropical cyclone, originated as the convergence of two major storm fronts, fueled by the lakes’ relatively warm waters--a seasonal process called a “November gale.” It produced 90 mph (145 km/h) wind gusts, waves over 35 feet (11 m) high and whiteout snow squalls. Analysis of the storm and its impact on humans, engineering structures, and the landscape led to better forecasting and faster responses to storm warnings, stronger construction (especially of marine vessels), and improved preparedness.” “Of the 12 ships that sank in the storm, five have never been found: Henry B. Smith, Leafield, James Carruthers, Plymouth, and the Hydrus. The most recent discovery was that of Wexford in the summer of 2000.” Meanwhile, just as polls indicate that Barack Obama and Mitt Romney are neck and neck in the presidential race, Frankenstorm Sandy is neck and neck with the current administration’s Benghazi scandal. Frighten the masses into worrying about downed lines, flash floods and resultant power loss and Frankenstorm inches ahead of Benghazi. They should stop calling Sandy “the perfect storm” and call it what it really is: “the perfect foil”. The ‘perfect storm’ may be coming our way but it’s got nothing to do with the weather.
