Splitting Time

Times were that time used to be steady, sort of one second after another. Now, we are told that time can be split into two components, sort of a fast first part and a slow second part with a “time vacuum” in the center.

According to an article by Ph.D. candidate Joseph Lukens, Drs. Daniel E. Leaird and Andrew M. Weiner at Purdue University, they have succeeded in splitting time (Nature, June 5, 2013). This effect is said to allow some sort of “time cloaking” (if you happen to be in the “no-time” center).

Imagine

Imagine the advantages such a time-invisibility-cloak could give you. You could be having a good time at the beach while your boss thinks you are hard at work. The possibilities to take advantage of this “time splitting” are just about endless. Some pundits are already thinking of secure communication devices making use of the “time-less” window. It could alter warfare, commerce and your love life.

Not so Fast

Not so fast! The invention is, shall we say at this time (which part window is it now?) a tad “experimental.” So, while you are contemplating how to make use of this finding, just remember, time is still marching on.
