In the intense cycle of the last 84 days before a presidential election whose outcome will spell Liberty or Marxism for America, many Catholics await the words from New York’s Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan that will tell them, in effect: “Guess Who’s Not Coming to Dinner”. President Barack Obama will break bread with the Catholic hierarchy and paying guests at the hugely successful Alfred E. Smith Foundation Dinner, October 18, just 19 days before Election Day.
There are those among the faithful who dare to ponder why. Baltimore Archbishop William E. Lori says an invitation to President Obama, to speak at the celebrated New York fundraiser alongside Mitt Romney, should not be misunderstood as a show of support for the president. (Catholic News Agency). Given the misery Obama chooses to specifically lay on the Catholic church as the first latter day world leader to force Catholic institutions to offer contraception, sterilization, and abortion-causing drugs through their health insurance plans, what possible other way is there to look at it?

Cleric apologists are trying to cover their invitation to Obama akin to Georgetown University, who admitted covering over the monogram “IHS”--symbolizing the name of Jesus Christ--inscribed on a pediment on the stage where Obama was speaking all because the White House had asked the university to cover up ALL signs and symbols there. Proof of the “IHS” covered up monogram was photographed by CNSNews.com. The oft-repeated alibi that the Alfred E. Smith dinner is an election-year custom, if not an institution; that its fundraiser is the annual lifeblood for a plethora of Catholic charities and that it passes political muster with a comedic theme, this year’s dinner will certainly make it appear as if the Catholic hierarchy is A-Okay with Obama’s stridently anti-Catholic policy. “But Edward Mechmann, who does public policy work for the New York archdiocese’s Respect Life office, said in an Aug. 7 blog entry that he did not see the invitation as undermining or contradicting the Church’s witness in public life. (Catholic News Agency) “There is no question that the President’s political agenda and policy record are deplorable from a Catholic perspective, Mechmann wrote Aug. 7 in his “Stepping Out of the Boat” blog on the Archdiocese of New York website. “But “given the consistency and strength with which our bishops--particularly Cardinal Dolan--have been proclaiming the Catholic view of public policy”, he does not think the event is likely to “lead anyone to believe that the Church is softening her defense of life, the family, and religious liberty. “When everyone wakes up the morning after, the struggle will resume,” wrote Mechmann. (But Obama’s photo op, Mr. Mechmann, will live right on through Election Day.) Mechmann continues...”It says to us that we can vehemently disagree with a public official’s positions, but we can still show respect for his office, and for him as a person, and treat him with civility. “It gives us an opportunity to act as Christians, and show some love to our adversaries, and even those whose policies we consider to be immoral and oppressive.” Patriots of all religious denominations can’t help but notice that loves washes right over Barack Obama. Cardinal Dolan has been heaped with praise by the major media for taking the leading role against Obama’s destructive HHS mandate. Regrettably Canada Free Press (CFP) was singing his praises back in April. Cardinal Dolan has a political way out of the Obama dinner invite. Although it is a matter of established tradition for the Al Smith foundation fundraiser to host both incumbents and presidential hopefuls during an election year, Archbishop Dolan’s predecessors made notable exceptions in 1996 and as recently as 2004--declining to invite either of the candidates. Like Obama, archbishops should be judged by their deeds rather than their lofty words. The words Catholics wait to hear from their archbishops this election round is “Guess Who’s Not Coming to Dinner”. Tomorrow is the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the “falling asleep” of the Mother of God. A good day to pray Godspeed for the words we most need to hear about Obama not coming to the Alfred E. Smith foundation dinner.
