It’s charity run, ride and walk season and it seems like everyone has at least one online fundraising campaign on the go.
But after that initial e-blast to friends and family go out what else can people do to boost their online fundraising efforts? How much is OK to ask for? Is it good practice to go back to people twice?
UJA Federation runs the Walk with Israel, one of the largest fundraising walks in Toronto, taking place on May 29. They have several tips to maximize online fundraising efforts that apply to all charity events and can be done as a family on individually.
These include:
- Ask often: Do not be afraid to send additional emails with an update on your fundraising progress.
- Ask big: Do not be afraid to ask for donations. One of the major reasons why people do not give is because they are not asked! The most positive fundraising results come from asking peer-to -peer.
- Lead by example: Pledge yourself. It is hard to ask for money without first making a gift yourself.
- Make it personal: Explain why the cause is important to you before you start fundraising so your kids will be motivated by the cause.
- Use your email subject line strategically: Make sure the subject line in emails is short and to the point, i.e. “Please Support the Goldberg Family”. Include a link to the organization or cause in the body of your email for more information about the benefits of contributing.
- Facebook, Twitter and BBM: Change your profile picture and use the cause logo, and add a one line call to action to your status update.
- Take advantage of social networks: Promote fundraising efforts and the cause as often as possible by posting updates on your Facebook Wall and on Twitter. Tag the organization’s profile and link related videos and donation information to your family page. Post photos or video of last year’s event on Flickr and YouTube.
- Incorporate Quick Response (QR) Codes in your offline marketing: Allow for easy access to your online campaign by creating a unique QR code that can be scanned with a smart phone and brings people right to your family donation page. Send your code to potential supporters online, through mailed cards, or add to flyers.
