It’s been aptly said that, “All would be well if there were no “Buts”. Today, 20th century medicine has provided us with many positive advantages. But it’s also given us some minor and a few major “Buts”. Recently, two separate reports show why it’s so difficult for medical consumers and doctors to make the right decisions due to conflicting evidence.
A Burping Volcano Stranded Me in EnglandBy Dr. Gifford Jones Monday, May 10, 2010
It’s been said that, “The best laid plans of mice and men often go astray.” How true! I recently planned to attend medical meetings in England, and Switzerland. I never reached Switzerland. A volcano in Iceland spewed ash all over Europe for nine days. No planes flew. But I didn’t spend all my time sulking in English pubs. So here’s what I learned.
Ashitaba Chalcones Show Efficacy in Battling Visceral FatBy Guest Column Wednesday, April 7, 2010
Japan Bio Science Laboratory
JBSL-USA has announced the results of a clinical study showing compelling weight loss effects of its Ashitaba Chalcone Powder.
In the randomized, double-blind, parallel group study, 26 slightly obese male and female patients with BMI between 25 and 30 took 200 mg day of Ashitaba Chalcone as an active ingredient after dinner for eight weeks. The patients were measured by CT Scan (total, visceral and subcutaneous fat areas), weight, waist and hip. After the eight weeks, the researchers observed a marked reduction in the visceral and subcutaneous fat, as well as in weight, and waist and hip ratio. The noted that the rate of change in visceral fat was greater than that of the subcutaneous fat, and attributed this to the fat-burning promotion and fat accumulation-inhibition effects of the ingredient.

“Don’t even think of agreeing to it”, I recently said to a friend who is a frequent flyer to the U.S. I was referring to the recent announcement that Canadians travelling to our friendly neighbour will be subjected to full body scans. It’s the latest attempt to ensure aviation safety, but how safe is this ionizing procedure to the passenger?

What You Should Know About TBIsBy Dr. Gifford Jones Thursday, October 8, 2009
What would I worry about if my children were playing hockey and football? In two words, brain injury. Earlier, this year actress Natasha Richardson fell and struck her head while skiing on a beginners’ slope at Mont Tremblant in Quebec. She walked away apparently without injury.
