Readers of the National Post will be very familiar with Paul Kokoski's well-written letters to the editor. He is a great defender of life and faith. Regarding the ongoing Al Smith Dinner controversy, I have read extensively on this topic, and appreciate Paul's input; but, like many, I have been torn. After much reflection, I would like to add another layer to this debate. It is this: Cardinal Dolan is not only the archbishop of what is considered a keynote diocese, he is also the shepherd of souls, and I expect he sees himself as a shepherd to Barack Obama's soul. What other faithful Catholics will have the opportunity to get the president's ear? This president is surrounded by liberal Catholics like Biden, Pelosi, Sibelius, dissident nuns, and more. In the upper echelons, it is bishops who often minister (or attempt to minister) to the souls of those in high power. Cdl Dolan has met with Obama, and we are not privy to what has gone on between them. Suffice it to say, Cdl Dolan, if he is the true shepherd we hope him to be, takes seriously his responsibility to reach out personally to this leader of the free world. To do so, he would surely feel it is vitally important to keep open the lines of communication, as a father would a wayward son. I would suggest it is possible Cdl Dolan has made his decision regarding the invitation based on his contact with Obama. He might believe that refusing an invitation to the president would shut the door to any further meaningful conversation. Since we do not walk in Cdl Dolan's shoes, nor know the relationship between this cardinal and his president, we should take seriously this shepherd of souls earnest exhortation for us to pray.

Given the clarity of instructions in Mark and Luke,(and how about this one in the letter of St. Paul!)this choice is baffling.
Ephesians 5:6-7 ...Therefore, do not associate with them...

The good Cardinal, unfortunately, appears to be less than bright... a simple buffoon, I fear, ill suited for the task assigned him so hopefully by the Pope. I pray God grants him clear vision; the wisdom to recognize the nature of his task, and the strength to face-down satan when he finally understands. May God bless you, Cardinal Dolan... we need all the help we can get.

New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Barack Obama, Alfred E. Smith Foundation Dinner

Regarding the article “Cardinal Dolan: Disinvite Barack Obama to the Alfred E. Smith Foundation Dinner!”

New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan’s decision to invite President Obama to the annual Al Smith dinner in New York City on October 18 is scandalous. Obama has proven himself, despite personal promises to the contrary, to be a militant adversary of the Catholic Church. His anti-life policies and mandate to suppress religious freedom in America is legendary.
