One size does not fit all
Equal opportunity does not mean equal results
- Guest Column By Cristine A. White Wednesday, August 15, 2012
The quest for equality is a fools errand. Yes, you heard that right. Only a fool believes that given equal opportunity everyone will have the same result. It can’t and won’t happen. People
have different personalities. different energy levels, different wants and needs and different goals. Look at any family. You’ll see the aggressive early bird, jogging at 6 AM, off to work at 7:00; 12 hour days, the whole package-focused on a climb up the ladder. That same family will have a happy 40-hour-a-week dad who wants nothing more than a roof, three square meals and a contented family. And there might be someone who by genetics or substance abuse can’t pull together a pay check on their own. Families or communities have Doctors, mechanics, cooks, government workers, truck drivers, janitors, clerks and business owners. All of those people had a public education.
All of them are reacting to and from their own life experience, their own nature, and their own dreams.
The problem is—families and individuals are unique. One size does not fit all. We can offer equal opportunity but we can’t guarantee equal results. Nobody can, not even Barak Obama. And his obsession with doing so is hurting everyone.
