let's not substitute one myth for another. The "galactic equator" is not a physical thing, it is a human construct- like the earths equator- that helps us understand the geography of the Galaxy. Nothing is going to happen in 3 years time. The earth's magnetic poles won't collapse and suddenly reverse in 3 years time as we pass about 6 degrees from the galactic equator, which isn't a physical force, and will take us about 36 years to pass through.

While the magnetic poles do move from time to time,
the geologic record that shows it has happened many times in our past but not at regular intervals. Time between reversals can be 10,000 yrs or a million years. We know that the magnetic field does not collapse in the process - if it did, there would be major extinctions that correlate with the geologic record for pole reversals - there is no correlation.

The latest hypothesis is that the Earth's magnetic field gets chaotic, with lots of north and south poles - so we still have a magnetic field, but compasses will be useless. And then it straightens itself back out, but with north and south reverse.
This is actually similar to what the sun does - but the sun does it on a regular 11 year cycle.

As for when it will happen - the people that observe the magnetic field think it will go through its chaotic thing and reverse some time soon based on how it is currently behaving, but that is a hypothesis waiting for the event to occur to be tested, and the exact date certainly is not known.

Dear Dr Tim
After reading an old article of yours, "Global Warming: The Cold, Hard Facts?" I must congratulate you on your bravery. It's so sad that such a statement can be made these days but you're right: universities are the most dogmatic and oppressive places in our society.
Last week Australia's Prime Minister, Keven Rudd, perfectly illustrated how personal attacks indicate the the abusers are losing the debate. A control freak, he's enraged that he won't be able to strut his stuff at Copenhagen being one of the three "world leaders" who were supposed to generate momentum before the conference - whatever that means. Brainwash the electorate?
He called our Opposition cowards for delaying his emmisions trading scheme. Incapable of understanding that people are increasingly sceptical of the GW alarmism - for very good reasons - he lashed out at the sceptics and 'deniers' (an ugly word that shows their desperation) accusing them of sabotaging the Copenhagen talks and playing "with our children's future."
Sabotage? Having a reasonable but alternative viewpoint is now sabotage? I think he's guilty of language abuse. And whenever control freaks trot out "our children" you know they've lost it.
Anyway, keep up the good fight. I'm proud that Australia has a few good fighters too, as you undoubtedly know.
Regards

This IPCC group is another case of environmentalism gone rogue, so to speak. If industrialization is the cause of global warming (climate change, whatever), the earth never would have survived past the 18th or 19th century due to the original industrialization of Europe. The so called 'carbon footprint' back then for one day would have equaled our current 'footprint' for 30 years. The environmental movement has done constructive things in the past when they started out but they have outlived their usefulness and have to come up with new crises to stay relevant. AGW is that fake cause.

Since when did science start espousing "Correlation proves causation" ?

Did I miss the memo ?

What has happened to the scientific method ? Or is climate science immune to the basic principles practiced by every other scientific discipline out there ?

How can any (intellectually honest) scientist claim absolute causation on any hypothesis based on nothing but partial correlations and computer models created from those partial correlations ? But apparently the more (questionable) data one can gather (empirical observation aside), the more absolute the hypothesis becomes.

Climate science is in its infancy, scientists still don't understand most of the mechanics behind cyclical climate change. To ignore these complex dynamics of our climate system is a blatant disservice to the science itself.

It seems AGW has become nothing but an 'appeal to authority'. Dare anyone step up to the plate to scrutinize and challenge the hypothesis (actually attempting to enact the scientific method), they are instantly tossed to the lions (media) to be chewed up and spit out, denigrated and hung out to dry.

AGW has upgraded from an hypothesis to a theory.... not by means of empirical evidence, but by vote.

Is this what's considered 'unbiased science' these days ?

It's a huge relief to individuals such as myself to see that there are still a small handful of scientists, like Dr. Tim Ball et al, who have not yet jumped on the AGW gravy train and are putting their necks on the line to call a spade, a spade... In honor of science and the principles it was founded on.

This is not about whether or not we should plunge forward with cleaner, smarter technology. That's obviously a no-brainer. This is about applying science as it was meant to be and getting to the truth, no matter what the end result is.

Sorry climatologists, but the science is NOT settled.

Shame on you all.

Dr. I have long been in the group of disbelievers of AGW. Until now I have not had the factual data to convince even friends that their media driven belief in 'climate change' is wrong. I am now motivated to start, in a small way, to convince at least my circle of contacts that they need to change their understandings and prevent their politicians from defrauding them.
Would you be kind enough to send me a short list of sources with which I could arm myself?

Tim, scientific accuracy and integrity are the least of the issues involved, important though they are.
http://www.cnsnews.com/news/article/56424
Even a cursory examination of the global-warming issue reveals that the proposed climate tax and regulatory "solutions" are more important to the promoters of man-made climate fears than the accuracy of their science or concern for human welfare. Former Colorado Sen. Tim Wirth summed up this view succinctly: "We've got to ride the global-warming issue. Even if the theory of global warming is wrong, we will be doing the right thing – in terms of economic policy and environmental policy."

The "right thing" Wirth is referring to is the unprecedented transfer of wealth, power and control to domestic and global governance. Controlling climate change appears not to be about controlling temperatures, but about controlling human freedom. Czech President Vaclav Klaus, who lived through totalitarian regimes, now warns that the biggest threat to freedom and democracy is from "ambitious environmentalism."

Current Global Temperatures Impossible According to IPCC ‘Science’.

Posted by Dr. Tim Ball on Nov 2, 2009 at 11:42 PM

Politicians More Powerful Than Nature

imageUN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon says, “Unless we fight climate change, unless we stop this trend, we’ll have devastating consequences for humanity.”

Other leaders make similar silly statements. Obama claims the “threat from climate change is serious, it is urgent, and it is growing.”
