I worship at a small druidic altar in the corner
Re: Green pagans find way to White House funding and Dancing Druids
Well, I guess I’m not sure if my letter is going to get through the inevitable
squakings of the loony left in my community, but I might as well try. I’m just a
regular joe guy…I work in construction, take nighttime paramedic classes, serve
in the national guard…I go to work in the morning, attend my classes, have a
few rounds at the bar and go to bed….I live a very uneventful life. I’m your
average jeans and t-shirt wearing, blue collar American. The only thing that
differenciates me from 90% of the population of the US is that rather than going
to church, synagogue, or mosque, I worship at a small druidic altar in the corner
of my room. The reason I’m saying this is because my community (the Pagan
community) has, sadly, been defined by the actions of the very vocal elitist
members of the extreme left. Those members you had the unfortunate privilage of
meeting in the round of letters following your first article, and no doubt follow
this second one. They are not representative of everyone in our community.
There are groups of us who do not subscribe to such extreme liberal ideaology.
I’m a voting Libertarian…I have friends, and fellow Pagans, who are
conservatives. There are regular, reasonable, down-to-Earth Pagans out there,
even if we aren’t as loud as some of the other members of our community.
Now about the topic of the Faith-based initiatives. You say that your tolerance
wanes when “Pagans look for funding from the public purse”. I totally understand
and agree 100%. Personally, I don’t feel comfortable with my tax dollars going
to fund Christian initiatives, Muslim initiative, Buddhist intiatives, or any
other faith initative for that matter. It would be the hight of hipocracy to
expect anyone to accept a Wiccan, Asatru, or Druid initiative. Personally, I
think the whole faith based intitative plan is a bad idea. I don’t think the
government should be funding any religious based organization, Christian, Jewish,
Muslim, Wiccan, Druid, or otherwise. They all should stand on thier own…..BUT,
I will also say that as long as the plan is running , whether you agree with it
or disagree with it, we would be stupid not to try and get a piece of the pie.
