Who Really Loves Canada?
Dear Editor:
So Paul Martin would have us believe that his support of gay marriage is a true measure of how
much he loves Canada and that if you support traditional marriage and the family you are
somehow “a lesser Canadian” or even unpatriotic. If you follow this line of logic it means
close to 70% of us are poor Canadians because polls clearly indicate the majority of
Canadians oppose same-sex marriage and want the traditional definition of marriage preserved.
Stephen Harper is to be commended for making this issue a key plank in his Party’s
platform. Harper’s integrity and courage is clearly contrasted with Martin’s obvious poverty
of both. Martin’s broken promise to his own MP Pat Obrien for fair and open Justice Committee
hearings on same-sex marriage cannot be forgotten. Nor should we forget that the man who was
going to “address the democratic defecit” undemocratically forced over 30 of his own MP’s to vote
against their conscience in support of Bill C-38. Harper has unwaveringly stated he would allow a free
Commons vote on gay marriage and ban further gay unions if Parliament decided to reinstate the
traditional view of marriage. This is clearly in line with the wishes of the majority in this country.
So when Paul Marin roared to wild applause at a Liberal rally “I love Canada” how seriously
can he be taken? What Paul Martin really loves is his “Liberal defintion” of Canada.
I wonder if it ever occurs to Mr. Martin that millions of Canadians do not espouse his views
of what it means to be “Canadian.” You cannot separate love from truth. As Paul Martin is not
particularly known for truth we have every reason to question his love for this great country.
