We have failed the victims
Dear Editor:
Re “We have failed the victims.” (Editorial, Dec,29).
While there are no easy answers to ridding our streets of killer-gangs, we have to start somewhere. Here is my two-cents-worth: From all accounts, most of the criminal-gang members come from homes where there are no fathers. If this indeed is the case then we have to find a way to stop these irresponsible people from indulging in unprotected sex. It’s unlikely that the males can be persuaded to change their ways, so we should target the females. Handing out welfare checks to unwed mothers is putting the cart before the horse. The government should pay these young women a monthly allowance to not have children. I believe that this would make our streets safer, and be cheaper in the long-run, than the cost of arresting, convicting and jailing these thugs over and over again. I realize there are many things that needs to be done, hiring more police officers, longer sentences for gang-members and more surveillance-cameras among them, to solve the gangster problem, but I think that my suggestion is worth a try?
