Is Democracy Losing Credibility?

Dear Editor:

Any hopes for peace anytime soon in the middle east hotbed nosedived dramatically with the stunning election of the internationally recognized terrorist group Hamas in the recent Palestinian election. It is difficult if not impossible to imagine the election of a party dedicated to terrorism and the destruciton of Israel as enhancing prospects for peace in this most troubled of regions.

Hamas was founded in 1987 by spiritual leader Ahmed Yassin. While it is true Mr. Yassin was known for charitable work in the West Bank and Gaza his organization is far better known for terrorism around the world. They conducted their first suicide bombing in April 1993. They regard Osama bin Laden as a hero and were the biggest foreign supporter of Saddam Hussein. A commitment to the destruction of Israel was part of their election platform.

In accordance with the Oslo Agreement and the “road map to peace” Israel has stated it will not negotiate with Hamas as long as they support terrorist activity and remain bent on the destruction of the Jewish state. Our newly designated Prime Minister Harper has joined acting Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, President Bush and most European leaders in refusing to recognize any government led by Hamas in it’s present form.

As long as the Palestinians embrace terrorism and genocide as a way of life and continue to train kindergarteners and first graders to aspire to murder innocent Jews in suicide raids the prospects of a legitimate Palestinian state and peace in the middle east remains an impossibility. The Bible predicts true peace will only come when established by the Prince of Peace. I believe the Bible.
