Kidnapping of Cecilia Zhang
Re “No evidence of justice.” (letters, May 12).
I agree that the death of Cecilia Zhang was probably an accident, but there is a big difference between an ordinary accidental death and one that’s the result of a botched kidnapping. First degree, as opposed to parents snatching their children back and forth, kidnapping should be a capital offence whether the victim survives or not. Cecilia’s death may not have been premeditated, but her kidnapping was. So it makes no difference whether Chen is guilty of manslaughter or murder in the first or second degree, the child is dead because of his criminal act, therefore he should be sentenced to life in prison, and serve it in China.
