Lifestyles

Dear Editor:

The current shenanigans between governments and commerce over global warming and unhealthy lifestyles would make a good script for a Monty Python or Marg Delahunty sketch. On the one hand we have the captains of industry spending billions of dollars to persuade us to buy more and more of everything from gas to junk-food to video games. On the other, the government spends millions of our tax dollars telling us to use less, or none of, these health and environment destroyers. Seeing that the free enterprise system depends on the advertising, selling and buying of all these products (and the more the producers raise the price, or the more they are taxed, the more we consume) it would seem we have two choices. )1: We can side with the purveyors of these commodities and go broke in the near future funding healthcare for millions of overweight seniors, or we can shuck all our bad habits - as we have with tobacco- and go broke providing welfare for the millions of unemployed that our new lifestyle will cause. As the King of Siam might put it: “It’s puzzlement.”
