Opp, Street Racing

Dear Editor:
Re “OPP, Street Racing.” (Arthur Weinreb, June 29):

Using helicopters for traffic control is a proven success in apprehending
dangerous drivers and, even more important, these eyes- in- the-sky could
eliminate many high-speed auto chases which often cause the deaths of
innocent people. Unfortunately, helicopters cost a lot of money and also
require expensively trained pilots and maintenance crews. Also, to be
really effective, more than one would be required. I suggest that the
government consult the military on the feasibility of using a few of its
helicopters, in conjunction with the OPP, to patrol our highways. This
would be far cheaper fo the OPP - read taxpayer- than buying their own.
Patrolling the highways and byways of Ontario could also be part of the
military chopper-pilots’ training schedule.
