Charles Adler: Ontario Tories blowing an opportunity
Let’s get this straight. The McGuinty crew is headed for a minority
government . But it is not because the Tories are chewing on the Liberal leg. McGuinty’s growing nemesis is on the left.
The latest polls shows the Greens and the NDP making gains and the Tories treading water. Even in 905 country the Conservatives are unimpressive, at only 41 percent support in the latest poll, down substantially from where they were when Mike Harris was in charge. Is there a lesson here? It is identical to the national experience. When Conservatives are a a timid bunch, afraid of their own shadows, voters go south on them. If the right hook isn’t there, the left wins. We know the Tories are afraid of Toronto Star editorials and the CBC. But you will never get middle class Ontarians flocking to you while appearing to be frightened by the usual suspects of left wing interest groups and their media sycophants. Too bad. What an opportunity provincial Tories
are passing up while McGuinty is melting down.
