Political Daydreams

Dear Editor:

Expecting the political party of your choice to live up to your expectations is, like a second marriage, the triumph of hope over experience. When Brian Mulroney was replaced by Jean Chrétien, government was supposed to be more open. It didn’t happen. When Chrétien’s scandal-ridden government fell, and Paul Martin didthered, Stephen Harper, moving to the centre like a red-Tory , and promising a squeaky clean government, should have been handed a majority. It didn’t happen. With Dalton McGuinty’s string of broken promises, John Tory should have been a shoo-in. It didn’t happen. In spite of all evidence to the contrary, those who take their politics seriously continue to believe that once their favorite politicians are in power everything will work as it should. It never happens. It’s never going to happen.
