Those Pesky Theists
Dear Editor:
Popular atheist writers such as Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens have been given a lot of ink by the media this year. Hitchen’s book “God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything” and Dawkin’s “The God Delusion” have been popularized by the media and have been making an all-out assault on religious faith of every and any kind.
But as the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams notes Christians would not recognize the faith the atheists are supposedly attacking. Dawkin’s and Hitchen’s clumsy and blatantly dishonest efforts to discredit Christianity and all religion may appeal to the gullible but can never stand up to serious scruitiny. C.S. Lewis was right when he compared atheists to ostriches who keep their heads in the sand in order to avoid facing facts that damage their position.
It seems to me the last thing this desperate and despairing world needs is the gloom and doom message of messengers such as Hawkins and Hitchens. How many hospitals have the atheists built? How many hungry have they fed? Where are their helping hands in the event of catastrophes like earthquakes, floods, famines, hurricanes, wars and psunamis? Can they match the track record of the Christian organizations they so maliciously malign?
The “better explanation” that Darwin hailed has been weighed and found sadly wanting by a world desperate for answers atheists will never provide. Millions have and continue to find genuine peace through faith in God. And for this the atheists have no effective argument.
