Soccer is not a religion

Dear Editor:

The young lady who refuses to play soccer because the ruling was made to not allow her to wear her religious head scarf that is wrapped under her throat deeming it unsafe due to possible strangulation causes me great concern.

To insinuate that Canada, where there is religious freedom, is now violating her religious right to wear this garment shows a lack of understanding of what religious ‘toleration’ truly is in meaning.
In Canada she is free to wear her religious head scarf at her discretion and practice her religion in the privacy of her home or religious dwelling (temple, church, and synagogue). But the soccer field is not a place of worship. It is a sport with international rules and regulations to be applied equally to all – religion is not a part of it.

If this young lady was ‘truly’ Canadian, she would have shown some grit and adapted her head scarf for this sport so she could play soccer she professes to love and also have her head covered. This lack of bending on her part shows a religion that is not accepting of others and that is the true shame of this whole incident.

To imply that is it this country’s fault that she must abandon soccer is extremely selfish.
