Canadian Food

Dear Editor:

We are constantly being urged to eat locally produced food. The reason
we’re given is that apart from being more nutritious than the imported kind,
it’s easier on the environment than food that has to be flown or hauled here
over great distances. The problem is it’s hard to find local produce, or even
food from other provinces, in the big stores. The sockeye salmon is from
Alaska, the canned mushrooms from China… We have searched high and low,
without success, for Canadian hothouse tomatoes. At one leading supermarket
the tomatoes were labeled Canada Choice, but on checking the small print,
I found they were from Mexico.
