Cadman affair accusations lacking credibilty
Dear Editor:
If Stephen Dion and his desperate Liberal party really think they can score political points from the bogus Cadman affair scandal it yet proves just how unfit Mr. Dion is to be Prime Minister of this country.
The allegations of bribery appear in a yet-to-be-released book “Like a Rock - The Chuck Cadman Story”
by a little known journalist Tom Zytaruk where Mr. Cadman’s widow, Dona Cadman alleges her husband was approached by two Conservative officials and offered a million-dollar life insurance policy in exchange for his vote to bring down the shaky Liberal government of Paul Martin in May of 2005. But in a statement issued this week Dona Cadman said she believed Stephen Harper when he personally told her two years ago he had no knowledge of the alleged bribe. Former party chief of staff Tom Flanagan and Doug Finley identified themselves as the two officials who met with Cadman but only to discuss re-admission to the Conservative caucus.
It is significant that four well known and highly respected journalists, Jonathan Kay, Adam Radwanski, Don Martin and Colby Cosh cast grave doubts about the credibility of the accusations. The liklihood of a man with the resume and credentials Tom Flanagan’s possesses risking his political career on such a foolish venture simply does not compute. None the less believable is that any insurance company on the planet would offer a man dying of cancer such a life insurance policy.
It is now highly unlikely the Ethics committee will even bother to probe the the affair.
It will take a lot more than grasping at straws and baseless allegations to convince Canadians to return Stephen Dion and his policy challenged Liberal Party to power.
