Prayer in the Legislature

Dear Editor:
Re “Time for prayer in the Legislature to bow out.” (May 12).

All the commotion over the proposed elimination of the Lord’s Prayer in the Ontario Legislature is nothing more than a tempest in a thimble. I suspect that the majority of Ontarians don’t care what prayer, if any, is used. In our multi-religious Legislature, it would be impossible to come up with a prayer that pleases every member. Besides, Jesus instructed his followers to say His Prayer in private. The MPPs should start their daily session with a minute’s silence. This would permit the various members to reflect on whatever they wished. As for the gabby, vocabulary-challenged members, a minutes silence would do them the world of good.

Incidently, The Lord’s Prayer doxology: “For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever” is not included in the original Lord’s Prayer.
