Count me with the outraged
Dear Editor:
There was a time in this country when recipients of the Order of Canada award helped to unite the country. True medical heroes like Banting and Best made us all proud when deserving civilians were recognized for a lifetime of outstanding achievement and dedication to the community.
That was yesterday. While there were those who applauded at least as many were outraged when the Order of Canada award was granted on Tuesday to Dr. Henry Morgentaler the abortion-rights activist and crusader of the 1970’s and 1980’s.
The Harper government was quick to distance itself from the decision and for good reason. When Morgentaler successfully had the high court strike down the Criminal Code restrictions on abortion in 1988 he opened the floodgates for unrestricted abortion in this country and Canada yet remains the only western democracy with no restrictions on abortion. The majority of Canadians do not support unrestricted abortion and even pro-choicers believe there should be some limits.
Between 1970 and 2004 there has been well over two million abortions in Canada. By honoring Mr. Morgentaler we are endorsing this outrage. Most Rev. Thomas Collins, Roman Catholic Archbishop of Toronto said it right when stating the Order of Canada has been “debased”.
Not only has the Order of Canada lost it’s prestige with this award but our judges and politicians must bear the responsibility for making Canada the only country in the world with no abortion law whatsoever and for that we should all hang our heads in shame.
