BEDFORD, NS, Representatives from the Canadian Navy and the President of Hyundai Heavy Industries visited Lunenburg, NS Friday for a demonstration of a new energy recovery technology. Clearwater Seafoods Limited Partnership ("Clearwater") has partnered with Richmond ON-based Thermalfrost Inc to commercialize the technology on Clearwater's offshore fishing vessels. The energy recovery technology will use waste heat harnessed from vessel engines to provide onboard freezing capacity while processing at sea.
The partnership between Thermalfrost and Clearwater, supported by the Nova Scotia Department of Environment to test and commercialize this new technology falls precisely in line with Clearwater's commitment to sustainability and technological investment. "When Thermalfrost told us that they had a way for us to use less fuel and divert waste energy from the engines to the freezers, we were excited to be part of the project," said Mike Pittman, VP of Fleet Operations.
The Naval Engineering Testing Establishment ("NETE") of the Canadian Navy and [Hyundai Heavy Industries] ("Hyundai"), the worlds largest shipbuilding company are also interested in the applicability of this technology. Upon arrival in Lunenburg, representatives from the NETE and Hyundai were welcomed by Clearwater, viewed the technology in operation and were treated to a luncheon of Clearwater FAS scallops onboard the Clearwater fishing vessel the Atlantic Guardian.
"With rising fuel prices and Clearwater's desire to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, everything we can do to be more efficient helps the environment and the bottom line," states Pittman. "We are every excited to see that others are as interested as we are to tackle these challenges."
