Ontario Ministry of Resources harassing war veterans

Canada's newest and most dangerous criminals do not rob banks. They are not new Canadians waiting to cross the american border with a political agenda. They are war veterans, farmers and rural business people who have managed to gain the attention of Ontario Minister of Natural Resources Minister David Ramsay.

Righteous Ramsay comes equipped with arms-bearing bureaucrats.

This is what is happening in rural Ontario, right under the noses of their urban brethren.

On the evening of October 20 2004, five sidearm-wielding Minister of Natural Resources (MNR) conservation officers—accompanied by armed Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) constables raided the home of a 78-year-old war veteran and his 80-year-old wife. With search warrants in hand, the six uniform ranks of intimidation slapped a heavy hand of authority down.

The crime of the rural pensioners?

The 78-year-old war veteran and Lanark Land association (LLa) member is alleged to have killed a goose on March 30 of 2004.

The war vet has a long and colourful history of exposing MNR and government incompetence and alleged shady dealings with both the environmental and hunting fraternities.

How much was this goose worth?

"The price of six lawmen, seven months of investigation, and Canada's priceless heritage and culture of freedom is the price we all bear," says LLa President Randy Hillier.

and the campaign of harassment goes beyond vulnerable war vets. Two retired RCMP constables have been harassed and reprimanded by RCMP brass, courtesy of the actions of local MNR enforcers. Both officers had been assisting a local farmer by removing nuisance deer under an MNR authority. MNR officers lodged a formal complaint with the RCMP brass (who were refused permission to join the deer removal), complaining the two constables were harassing MNR enforcers.

"apparently in Ontario, individuals who stand up and defend themselves are now menacing and threatening?" asks Hillier.

"The RCMP officers fear further disciplinary actions and have cowered from assisting Lanark farmers in removing deer. It appears the MNR always get their man, but not the RCMP."

Nor does the MNR posse only turn out at the homes of suspected goose killers.

another local farmer and LLa member--critical of MNR incompetence--was charged on September 28, 2004 with the heinous crime of shooting a ground hog.

as Hillier explains, this was an easier crime to investigate as the MNR took only four months to lay the charges: "again a groundhog is worth more than any and all farmers when viewed through MNR eyes. The groundhog is complacent, passive and not critical of the MNR, therefore must be protected."

Local farmers charge that the MNR head office in Peterborough has placed a gag order on all staff, and forbids headquarter staff to accept telephone calls or correspondence from Lanark area farmers and land owners, who are members of LLa.

"although we believe the public service is employed to address all citizen concerns, this is clearly a false premise in today's MNR," says Hillier. "When did our public service become the personal fiefdom and attack dog of the Liberal ministers, and not accountable without obligation to the people?"

Things are even worse in Kemptville, where, says Hillier, the office of the MNR now has the authority to contravene MNR policy in a witch-hunt against Lanark area landowners: "The local office is given free rein to add yokes of obstacles, and corrupt conditions to general policies. Lanark residents are only allowed to discuss MNR problems with the Salem judges in Kemptville, who have condemned them. There is no appeal, no greater authority then the gavel and guns in Kemptville. Injustice is now transparent and open and a mandated MNR process."

This is the same Ontario Liberal government that dons a food cop role in Ontario public schools, recently removing potato chips and other snacks from school snack machines.

"Our view of democracy is skewed when freedom and justice is suppressed by state-sponsored fear and Canada is just a shadow of our past," said Hillier. "Sixty thousand Canadians died fighting for freedom, and democratic principles of justice in WW2. as a child I knew Canada had won that war and that our vets had not died in vain.

"as an adult, the evidence is Canada won the battle, but is now losing the war. Our vets are remembered once a year on November 11, but why they fought is long forgotten by many everyday. Not only have our vets died in vain, those who remain must live in fear of government retribution and remain silent, like those pre-war Europeans."
