Hillier's comments were not "barbaric"

By Arthur Weinreb
Saturday, July 30, 2005

Toronto-- General Rick Hillier, Canada's Chief of Defence Staff has caused some controversy lately with his outspoken comments. Hillier had recently said that the Canadian military must be prepared to kill people. In addition the Defense Chief referred the terrorists in Afghanistan and elsewhere as "murderers and scumbags".

Outspoken Independent MP Carolyn Parrish fired off a letter to Defence Minister Bill Graham castigating Hillier as well as expressing shock that Graham had tolerated Hillier's comments. Parrish described Hillier as "truly barbaric" and requested the government to "muzzle the beast". It is no little irony that Parrish, who called Americans "bastards" and was proud of it, would demand that someone else be muzzled.

There is no doubt that General Hillier's comments were controversial but to call him "truly barbaric" is outrageous, even considering the source.
