Opinions

a country of masochists

I have long wondered why Canadians are so docile in dealing with their elected officials, allowing them to steal them blind and then re-electing the same thieves to come back for more. There must be something in the Canadian psyche that mistakes masochism for tolerance.

The latest example of the Liberal kleptocracy's contempt for the laws of this country manifested itself last week when former Prime Minister Jean Chretien lectured the Gomery Inquiry on the importance of keeping the country together. all the while the Canadian Mediacracy barked and clapped like trained seals. Never mind that in the process of squandering one-quarter of a billion dollars to buy Quebec's loyalty, about 40 percent of it found its way to Quebec's friends of the Liberals. The way 'da liddle guy from Shawinigan' explained it, the Province of Quebec has only two types of advertising agencies: those that are "separatist friendly" and those that are "federalist friendly", which according to Chretien means they are also "Liberal friendly".

It's entirely possible that I, as an anglo, do not quite understand how things work in Quebec. But, as a person with morals and ethics, I am appalled. But what's more appalling is the utter and absolute subservience of the people of Canada in the face of having a country run by a coalition of thieves and special interests. at each election cycle they march to the polls, like lemmings, to vote for the crooks--again.

Considering that the nation has a total population of over 32 million people, the imbalance between what goes to the Province of Quebec and what goes to the rest of Canada is stunning. Quebec's population numbers about 7.56 million, or about 24% of the total population of Canada and it is the second most populous province after Ontario. Yet in terms of net gain, Quebec has done very well within confederation, netting some $168 billion more from Ottawa that it paid out in taxes between 1962 and 1991. By comparison, alberta with a population of a mere 3.2 million souls paid $139 billion more to Ottawa than it received in cash or services

In his testimony before the commission, Chretien's contempt for Canada and the laws that govern us was profound in the extreme- like a slap in the face. His tawdry theatrics with the golf balls did show one thing: he still has the balls of a canal horse, unlike his successor.

His comment that in the course of saving the country it's possible that some unscrupulous people may have stolen a few million here or there is a reflection of just how entitled he, and by implication his Quebec cohorts, feel about the taxpayers' money. Hey, it's only a few million, which we can easily get back just by sticking it to the taxpayers just a little bit harder.

and this brings me to the crux of my fascination with why Canadians continue to vote Liberal. We like to expound on our nation's moral superiority over other countries like, say, the United States. But just as sure as the sun will rise tomorrow, no president could have gotten away with the things that the Liberal Prime Ministers from Quebec have gotten away with for the last half-century. at the very least there would have been an impeachment proceeding, as in when Nixon or Clinton broke the laws of the land, and at most there would have been jail time.

But Chretien is so sure that this thing can be kept under wraps that he arrogantly denies that anything was wrong. Of course most of the barking seals never thought to hammer Chretien for missing the point of the inquiry. It wasn't about spending the money in the first place; it was about money being stolen. In that respect Chretien is a lot like his good friend Bill Clinton who also missed the point in excusing what he did as being all about sex. But at least Clinton felt enough shame over his misdeed that he felt it necessary to lie. Obviously Chretien's shame button hasn't been reset in the last 40 years.

I don't believe Canadians are as tolerant and accepting as they like to think of themselves being. I think Canadians are perverse in that they seem to enjoy being degraded by their government. The more the Liberals do it, the more support they get at the polls.

I frankly believe this country would be a lot better off without Quebec and if I felt it would have any effect I would shout this from Toronto's highest building. It's an interesting position that the 75 percent of Canadians who are not Quebecers are finding themselves in.

The federalists from Quebec are playing bait and switch with the separatists so that they can continue to scare Canadians into bribing Quebecers to stay in Canada. and Canadian voters seem to like it.
