A return to segregation

A
coalition of 22 black groups in the Toronto area is calling for a return to
segregation. The group wants such things as separate schools for blacks and a
separate criminal justice system for blacks. Sandra Carnegie-Douglas, a
spokeswoman for the coalition was quoted in the Toronto Star as saying that they don’t call it segregation. It
doesn’t matter what they choose to call it; it is segregation. A rose by any
other name.
The
formation of the coalition came as a result of the increased gun violence in
certain areas of Toronto. Forty one of the 61 murders recorded in the city of
Toronto so far in 2005 have been committed with guns. The Star also
noted that black leaders estimate that 90 per cent of the shootings involve
blacks.
It
is understandable why the black community want to head out on their own. The
various levels of governments, especially the feds and city of Toronto have
virtually no interest in fighting the increasing gun violence. Justice Minister
Irwin Cotler is quick to say what he won’t do (increase minimum sentences) but
shows reluctance when it comes to any legislative changes. The Martin Liberals
refuse to get excited about violent crime. They gave us the gun registry, what
more do we need? Besides if the black community gets terrorized by gun toting
thugs what are they going to do-- vote Conservative? Not a chance since Martin
has successfully painted Harper and the Conservatives as racists and bigots.
At
the local level, Mayor David Miller and his left wing council got rid of Julian
Fantino and replaced him with one of their own. Community policing and hugging
potential criminals is the order of the day. And police can’t investigate black
crime too much lest they be accused of racial profiling.
What
is never said but is nonetheless an unalterable truth is that Paul Martin,
Dalton McGuinty and David Miller wouldn’t be so cavalier about violent crime if
it were middle class white kids that were being knocked off instead of young
black males. Politicians just love blacks as a group so they can brag about how
tolerant they are and how diverse the country is but as individuals, young
black men who live in subsidized housing are clearly expendable. So it really
is no wonder that some in the black community see this segregation that is not
really segregation as a solution to their problems.
The
desire to have separate schools and different consequences for blacks who run
afoul of the criminal justice system is an offshoot of Canada’s multicultural
policies. Immigrants who come to this country are not expected to be
Canadians--they are encouraged to retain their own culture and become
hyphenated Canadians. Canadian schools teach second generation Canadians who
are born in this country that Canada isn’t as important as the country that
their parents came from. Wanting to be separate is almost the Canadian way.
Unfortunately,
the problems within the so-called black community will never be solved until
everyone is able to face the reality of the cause. All ethnic groups have their
share of bad guys, but the violence that has been escalating in some areas of
Toronto is within the Jamaican-Canadian community. Parts of the city are
starting to resemble the high crime urban areas of Jamaica. Those whose roots
are in Africa or Asia or the rest of the Caribbean are not the problem. In many
ethnic communities the men come to Canada first, get landed and then sponsor
their families. Regarding Jamaican immigration, it is normal that women come to
Canada first to do the jobs that Canadians won’t do. They leave their children
with elderly relatives and then sponsor them to Canada a few years later. The
real problem within the community is the lack of a proper family structure and
male role models.
As
long as these kids grow up without fathers, the problems are going to continue.
Separate schools or separate subway cars will solve nothing.
