Super Bowl: "Level One national security event"

Ranked in importance right behind a presidentialinauguration, the Super Bowl this Sunday in Miami is considered a "LevelOne" national security event. The printed security plans for this event is 6inches thick - plans which began just two-weeks after last year's SuperBowl. The cost for security at Sunday's event has been estimated at $6million.

Security for the Super Bowl includes aerial protection by jet fighters andhelicopters, tactical weapons teams, mobile bomb labs and robots, high-techX-ray machines and sensors, intelligence databases and hundreds of uniformedpolice officers. There are also 66 specialized canine bomb teams workingwith more than 24 federal, state and local agencies in providing securityfor the event, in addition to the NFL's own security personnel. Further, theFBI also is performing background checks on stadium workers and othersupport personnel who are involved in the various services, and will beproactive should anything of concern be uncovered.

Julie Torres, chief of the ATF's Miami office and the designated federalcoordinator for Super Bowl security, stated "We don't have any specificthreat to this event," when asked by an Associated Press staff reporter. "Itis the biggest event in the nation as far as a sporting event. It isvulnerable as far as any terrorist activity. We have to plan excessively sowe can provide proper security," added Torres.

For general security purposes, attendees to the Super Bowl are prohibitedfrom bringing most items into the game, other than a small bag that will besubject to search. Parking lot events such as "tailgating," tents andoutdoor cooking is prohibited on the property.
